Why You Should Always Shower At Night Instead Of The Morning, According To A Doctor

It’s long been debated when the best time of day to have a shower is

There are two types of people in the world: those who shower in the morning, and those who shower at night.

Personally, I am definitely someone who prefers to shower in the evening. There’s just something about getting into bed feeling all fresh and clean, especially if I’ve put on a new set of pyjamas and climbed into sheets that have just been changed.

It all boils down to personal preference, but medical professionals have also weighed in on the long-standing debate about the best time to shower.

One of the experts who has spoken about the matter is Doctor Aragona Giuseppe, a GP and medical advisor at Prescription Doctor.

Dr Giuseppe noted that many people opt for a morning shower because “it awakens the senses and refreshes you ready for the day ahead.”

While this may be true, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the better choice.

After all, just because a habit is popular doesn’t always make it the best one for everyone.

In fact, Dr Giuseppe seems to believe there are more benefits to showering at night rather than in the morning.

Some of the advantages he points out include the fact that showering at night helps to relax you before bed, relieves tension in your shoulders that builds up from work or gym sessions, and it helps wash away the dirt and sweat accumulated throughout the day.

Dr Giuseppe further explained to Glamour UK: “The main benefit of night-time showers, however, is that during the day, your body and your hair can collect airborne allergens and irritants, dirt and grime, especially in the summer months from pollen, chemicals and sweat.”

“So if you go to bed without showering, these will then transfer to your bed and sheets and may not only promote dirty bedding and night time allergies but could also cause itchy, irritated and dry skin as well as facial skin issues such as acne due to dirty sheets and pillow cases from day time oil and dirt.”

To wrap things up, Dr Giuseppe strongly believes that showering at night is the better choice, not only for cleanliness but also for a better night’s sleep.

As for how long you should spend in the shower—whether in the evening or morning—dermatologist Emma Amoafo-Mensah recommends you limit it to less than ten minutes.

“Many people are spending too long in the shower, the optimal time spent should be less than ten minutes,” she told the Metro.

“Spending longer than this increases the chances of your skin feeling dry and irritated, especially if the water is too hot and you’re prone to dry skin.”

Amoafo-Mensah also advised that the water temperature should not be too hot, as it can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.

So, enjoy your showers, and take care of your skin!
